What we need to understand about the Schooling today is fast changing in its needs. Various agencies associated with the schools keep defining new requirements as per the desires of the changing society that is responsible for changing the outlook of individuals and trying to bring it on par with the industrialization and globalization of the country, the development of the corporate business houses and far reaching economic changes. These agencies speak in terms of their own requirement and are confusing the current and prospective parents of the school.
Govt. Education departments also come unclean and are sharing the views of these agencies and are contributing its might in adding to the confusion in the minds of the public and the schools, as the Govt. has to streamline the political agenda of the ruling party thereby and introduces its own functional norms and creates different levels of managing the administration in their educational institutions
To simplify our understanding and expectations for the schooling, I would like to introduce some of the aspects of relevant options that we should consider before going to the schools.
THE PRE SCHOOL STAGE
This stage is most important to us, how much should the parents know about the new born baby. For the repeat entry of a new baby in the family its renewed revival of emotions and happiness, and almost everything moves on expected lines. But, for the First Timer Parents, its most exciting as they are thronged with advisories from all corners of the world, they are still exploring the world with their just acquired status as Parents. Hence all of us should know the expectations from the school. This can be grouped in two steps as:
Step-1: the Infancy Step – it is up to 2 years age. Here the child grows practically from ‘no motion or movement to the exciting movements viz. holding, catching, sitting, walking, drinking, eating, throwing, jumping, dancing, talking and singing’. Some Educational Psychologists have stated that this Step be called “development of sensori motor stage”, children pickup their intelligence through motor activity and with the limited use of symbols and mother tongue, the common language used at home, together with the physical interaction with family members. This experience is long-lasting for the child. Here, children understand the emotions of likes and dislikes, love and anger, self awareness and self confidence, understanding and recognizing. It is during this stage that the child develops its ability to form and understand attachments and bonds with the family establishing the relationship. Child begins the process of making sense of the world around itself.
Step-2: the Early Childhood Step – it is between 2 years and 5 years age. The child has grown up practically to a stage where for the first time parents are planning to put him away from the comforts of the home and cosy care of the parents to a place called the school – be it a preschool or the regular school, for the child - it’s the most turbulent period at least for few days to weeks before he or she settles to the changed circumstance. In some cases, it’s a great breakdown of emotional continuity for both parents and the child, but mostly it’s a matter of rejoicing as it’s the beginning of a new chapter in the history of parents and the child. During this stage, child’s intelligence increases through the use of already learnt symbols, use of memory, self imagination and presumption of objects, fixing of memory images for almost anything that a child sees. At this stage the language of the child matures and a process of thinking and reasoning is still non-logical, non-reversible and is highly ego centric.
